Internships & Residency

HCS offers a one to two year internship experience that can be completed while finishing your degree, taking counselors from informal counseling and discipleship opportunities in their local context to experience as a professional counselor. For more information, contact us using the general inquiry form on our contact page. To apply, please fill out the internship application below.

Year One – Internship

For those without prior counseling or ministry experience, interns will counsel (this could include mentoring and discipleship) 2–3 hours per week within their local churches and parachurch ministries. This initial informal exposure is critical to gaining the comfortability and proficiency that will be demanded of the Year Two Residency.

What you’ll experience:

  • 2–3 hours of counseling in your local church and present ministry contexts
  • Weekly small group supervision with an experienced biblical counselor (2–3 interns)

This track is ideal for:

  • Those who don’t have formal counseling experience
  • Those who want to minister in their current local church context
  • Those who want to make the jump from theory to practice

Cost: $30 per week that you’re under supervision

Year Two – Counseling Residency

Counseling Residents will counsel 3–5 cases per week provided by Hope Counseling Services. *This internship has high expectations of abilities and experience that can translate to other contexts.

What you’ll experience

  • You’ll provide biblical counsel for up to 3–5 cases per week that you’ll be assigned through HCS
  • Weekly small group supervision with an experienced biblical counselor (2–3 interns)

This track is ideal for…

  • Those who are already doing informal and formal discipleship and counseling
  • Those who want to counsel vocationally or in intentional lay ministry in local church and parachurch contexts
  • While the exceptional student may qualify directly for the Counseling Residency, most students will begin as Year 1 Interns

FAQs

  • Location?  This program can be completed remotely or in-person.
  • Will this meet my practicum requirements? Either year can fulfill the practicum hours requirements of some seminary counseling programs (such as WTS, SBTS, SEBTS, Liberty). However, we recommend both years of training for the benefits of development over time and exposure to different counseling contexts.
  • Do I have to complete year one to apply for year two? While the exceptional student may qualify directly for the Counseling Residency, most students will begin as Year 1 Interns
  • How long are the internships? Both programs are 9 months and begin in August and January.
